UN recommends disbanding RAB and NTMC

The UN human rights office (OHCHR) has recommended disbanding the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and restrict functions of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).

It also recommended demilitarize control of paramilitary forces Ansar and VDP.

These were part of the UN recommendations addressing “militarization of policing”.

The UN human rights office launched its fact-finding report on human rights violations and abuses related to the July uprising, earlier today in Geneva.

The UN recommended ending of unlawful surveillance and abolish the National Telecommunications Monitoring Centre, amend Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulation Act to clearly regulate surveillance.

It also recommended that the army be deployed only in the most exceptional situation for internal security, under civilian control.

The UN body also recommended independent commission to investigate police violations and similar independent accountability and justice mechanism for armed forces and BGB.
